So What is “Energy Work” Anyway?
Oh boy, that is the question. It’s a great question without an easy answer. But it starts with this:
Everything in the universe is made up of vibrating molecules.
The molecules within our bodies are constantly vibrating and radiating positive or negative, balanced or imbalanced, open or closed frequencies. Our bodies are energetic bodies.
Every component of a cell, every cell to cell communication, every function of an organ or muscle, and the movement, breath or relaxation of our entire body is affected by and emits specific energy. When part of us is physically or emotionally damaged, it affects parts or all of our biology. I know that some people feel nervous about the concept of energy. Let me assure you that this has nothing to do with religion or spirituality. If you believe God created us and the universe, then God made us this way. If you don’t believe that, then we have evolved this way. The energy that works in our body is not evil or nefarious. It simply is. It is there. It is working all the time, whether you believe it or not, or are scared of it or not.
Over most of my career, as far back as 1999, I have truly been led to develop the skills and insight to work in the energy realm. I didn’t want to do it. I was already a kooky chiropractor. We were outcasts of the medical system, working in a paradigm that was shunned, and called quacks all the time. I certainly didn’t want to be any crazier! But it seemed the more I fought it and denied it, the less happy and successful I was. My assistant at the time was incredibly talented at Contact Reflex Analysis (CRA). She had learned it through an old time chiropractor who had passed away. I learned it and used it in assessing where and how patients needed to be adjusted (which drastically increased my skill level), but I just left to her all of the great techniques for nutrition and organ support. For some reason though, I was still very drawn to continuing education classes involving detailed supplement usage and cellular biology. Many of these classes employed various techniques of “testing” the body for specific interventions. I learned some Applied Kinesiology, Brimhall, Nutrition Response Testing, and more in depth Contact Reflex Analysis. I purchased books on eBay that had been out of print for years because some of the information could not be found anywhere else.
“I had learned about a technique that taps into subconscious emotional blockages and started studying that… This was the breakthrough I was looking for!”
Somewhere around 2008 I was working with another chiropractor who would ask me to come check her patients with CRA. I did and she would tell them what to do based partly on my findings. She saw great progress in her patients with that, but I still wasn’t using it with my own patients. It was around that time that I started incorporating Craniosacral Therapy into my treatments. Within the next couple of years I did start employing energy testing and very specific nutritional therapies. I just wasn’t seeing the results I wanted even if patients were compliant. So I wondered what else could be missing? I had learned about a technique that taps into subconscious emotional blockages and started studying that. I went through the levels of certification and used the techniques on my patients. This was the breakthrough I was looking for!
My journey included getting to the Master level of certification for BioEnergetic Synchronization Technique (BEST) and then discovering that what worked for me and my patients was truly a mix of all the techniques I had learned along the way. It was apparently also a journey of listening to myself, my inner voice, instead of the experts in each technique. It also included Reiki certification in the early 2010’s.
So, what is the energy work that I do?
It is a system of looking for weakened responses within your body and then trying to figure out what would make it strong again. I’m always looking for subconscious emotional nervous system connections that are throwing off the body’s ability to respond correctly to the stress at hand, or to relax in the absence of an immediate stressor. This is an issue in all of us and there are very few ways to correct this. It can be the reason muscles don’t relax, even with adjustments and muscle work. It can cause organs to overwork or become sluggish. It can prevent us from getting over an infection, or from utilizing a nutrient in the way we need. If I find a problem and it is not a subconscious emotional issue, then I look to supplements, physical work, breath, posture, essential oils, or anything else that may balance the energetic discourse.
No one’s session will be like another’s. And it is not something we have to do multiple times in a row. One or two visits will give us the beginning of the map back to balance. There has to be time between sessions for our nervous system to get used to responding appropriately, or for supplements to nourish what was starving. Then we meet back and see what the body is telling us. People who get the best ongoing results may come in once every one or two months to continue clearing and balancing.
As long as we are humans, living on this planet, we will never be without glitches in our systems. But when we have tools and techniques to help us work through them we can continue through life as comfortably as possible.
